Courthouse - The Clock Tower's First Night!

Just like during the last night for the old clock tower, the new Courthouse clock tower bathed in a full moon tonight!

The night after the fire - August 8, 2006

The tower's last night - August 9, 2006. It was removed the following day.

Courthouse - Walls & Insulation

Most of the construction on the Courthouse last month was not readily visible from outside, but this week the exterior walls began to take shape on the Ground Floor. You can see the outline of some of the front first floor windows now. Also, some gray insulation was blown onto the raw steel beams on the Ground Floor.

Courthouse - The Clock Tower Emerges

This week the Courthouse clock tower outline emerged. When the steelworkers finished, they packed up; but before they left, the steelworkers planted an American flag on top of their new creation!

Courthouse - Workman's Accident

The whole back of the Courthouse is framed now in steel and both three-story elevator shafts are joined by the beams. The structure is attached to the downhill side of the old Post Office and each day the outline of the new Courthouse creeps closer to Washington Street. On the far left, a fireproof stairwell (surrounded by scaffolding) is being poured in place. This stairwell sits on what used to be part of the alleyway behind the Sheriff's Office. Earlier this morning, a workman was injured in a fall and was taken away by ambulance for treatment.

Courthouse - Steel Skeleton

The Courthouse's steel skeleton continues to rise between the front (right) and rear (left) elevator shafts. Today's temperatures in the upper 20s coupled with gusty 25-35 mph winds are making conditions challenging for the workers. Despite the weather, the steelworkers are showing excellent humor and usually wave when they see folks taking photos!

Courthouse -The Second Elevator Shaft

The concrete pumper truck pours the Courthouse's second elevator shaft this afternoon. On the right, the beginning of the steel skeleton is being erected.

Courthouse Groundbreaking

Funding is now in place, so today is the Groundbreaking Ceremony for the new Courthouse! Despite the extremely heavy rain, the Governor, our local Judges and all sorts of politicians came to Berkeley Springs to get the job done!

Below I'm standing with Debra A. Kesecker, Clerk of the County Court, who saved all of our Deed Books from the fire by safely closing the vault door the night before. I watched her carefully fulfill this duty every night that I was in the Deed Room at closing time. I was always impressed by her through attention to this important act. Who would have ever dreamed that her absolute dedication to duty would save our irreplaceable Deed and record books from one terrible night of complete destruction!
